Summer Solstice 2019

Beneath the trees, in the shadows, where wild things grow,

Magic lives there.

In the meadow, ‘midst honey bees and poppy heads,

Magic lives there.

A storm-swept beach, within the waves and frenzied foam,

Magic lives there.

Near the hearth, with tousled heads and dimpled hands,

Magic lives here.

It is Solstice weekend for us, in our little country at the edge of the world.

In our old life, across the ocean, we were less unusual. We carved pumpkins in October. We celebrated Winter in December, the same as everybody else.

When we moved to the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons switched places but the calendar stayed the same. My own rhythm yearned to switch too, but I was trapped within an artificial, antiquated system that governed my months and minutes, my every heartbeat…
